Allergen Testing and Inspections
We offer allergen inspections and allergen testing services in West Palm Beach, Ft Lauderdale, Miami and all the surrounding areas.
During such inspections the inspector will be searching for unusual odors, rodent droppings, roach droppings, roach body parts, and other insect bio detritus. He will also check for pet hairs, dust, and other evidence of common household allergens. In addition to the visual inspection for evidence of contaminates, he can also do allergen testing.
Our inspector is very experienced at finding evidence of pests and allergen contamination in your home. He was a health inspector for 3 years and has done allergen and mold inspections since 2004 so he has the experience and knowledge you are looking for.
He can often tell if you have silverfish, roaches, rats, or mice, via a visual inspection. All the above are known causes of allergic reactions. With a proper inspection, the consultant will know the best places to test, or if testing is even worthwhile.
The inspection is just as important as the test. The inspection can help us discover where the allergen source is. Testing in combination with an inspection is the best way to gather information. The inspectors report will document all this information so that the issue can be resolved.
Allergen Testing Services
Allergen testing is sometimes highly recommended. During testing we may test for all or some of the following:
Dust mite allergens
Roaches allergens
Rat allergens
Mice allergens
Cat allergens
and Dog allergens.
Why Is Allergen Testing Not Needed in All Cases?
- It is obvious that allergens cannot be seen, however, often the sources of biological allergens can be seen. Great examples of visual sources of bio- allergens are roach droppings, rat droppings, and silverfish droppings in an attic. Seeing large numbers of such droppings in the attic, and then smelling them in the home is good evidence of a likely allergen problem. If during an allergen inspection you can see it with your eyes, or smell it with your nose, then testing may not be needed. If desired visual findings can be confirmed via actual allergen testing.
- The above photo is of several Palmetto Bug droppings on insulation and plywood in a Palm Beach mansion inspected by us
on 1-30-15. These allergenic Palmetto Bug droppings are very similar in shape, color, and overall appearance to rodent droppings but much smaller than rat droppings and a little smaller than mice droppings. Palmetto Bug allergens can be picked up by testing for American Cockroach allergens.
Reliability Problems
Results for allergen testing in homes sometimes give false negative results. For example, German, or Oriental Cockroach allergen tests may not pick up allergens from Palmetto Bugs. These huge Palmetto bugs look like the American roach in the image.
Such tests are not geared towards reading the levels of allergens from Palmetto Bugs that are often found in homes in our own area. In conclusion, testing for roach allergens in Florida homes sometimes gives false negative results. To detect Palmetto Bug allergens our perferred allergen testing lab Indoor Biotechnologies has to run a test for American Cockroach allergens. American cockroaches are very similar to, or exactly the same as what we Floridians call palmetto Bugs.
Many people in Florida have Palmetto Bugs and do not realize they have them because they rarely leave behind evidence in the habitable areas of homes. Instead, they often inhabit attics where they deposit large amounts of droppings. In addition, they also leave behind body parts in attics, and behind refrigerators and ovens. The point is, you may have palmetto bugs that may show up during an allergen inspection, however allergen testing may give false negative results if the consultant runs the wrong test, or if he does not know where to look.

Dust Mite Testing
Dust Mite testing is a great example of when testing for allergens may be reliable and advisable. With dust mites, testing may be crucial. These tiny arachnids ( 8 legged spider like arthropods) are soo small that they cannot be seen. Because they cannot be seen we test for their presence.
Typically we take one to two samples of dust to be analyzed for dust mite allergens when such services are deemed necessary and are paid for. We do not randomly test for dust mites. If a property is humid or dusty then dust mite testing is recommended.
In business since 2003 we have provided such services for thousands of renters, home owners, property managers, allergen doctors, and mold removal specialist.
